Treatment of exhaust gases
A catalytic converter is an emissions control device that converts toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas to less toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction (an oxidation and a reduction reaction). Catalytic converters are used with internal combustion engines fueled by either petrol (gasoline) or diesel—including lean-burn engines as well as kerosene heaters and stoves.
A couple items of temperature information are needed in order to produce the optimum exhaust treatment, principally in diesel exhaust systems. For this application, Sensor Technology has developed special probes that cover the complete temperature range up to 1000°C.
In addition, our temperature sensors are also used as component protection (overheating protection).
Temperature sensor design
The high-temperature measuring elements are available in differing lengths for temperatures of up to 1050°C , value that is seldom required in diesel technology where temperatures of up to 750°C are customary.
There are two elements, 24 mm long type HA 2421 and the 4 mm long type HA 421. The longer version is suitable for open installation due to its very short response time, while the short version is a very robust model intended for installation in closed areas.
